Last week we studied the digestive system.  What are the parts to the digestive system and how does it all work?  So, we did an experiment that showed us how our bodies filter out the excess.  Here’s what we used:

  • a strainer
  • a coffee filter and ground coffee beans
  • a plastic container/bowl
  • spoon
  • 1/2 glass of water
  • 1 tea bag
  • whole cloves
  • ground pepper

Adding  coffee…

Adding black pepper…

Adding cloves…

Stirring it all together in 1/2 glass of water…

Time to start pouring…

What’s left?

We talked about the filtering system in our bodies (kidneys), the process of food flowing through the large and small intestine, and how long it takes for certain kinds of foods to digest completely.  We figured the bigger the chunks of food (cloves were our example), the less likely it is to filter easily.

What kinds of science lessons/experiments have you been doing in your home?  Leave me a comment :-)
